It Takes A Village

Starting your own venture is no small feat. The starting goal might be to create and sustain a business but the real work becomes your evolution into an entrepreneur.

As an entrepreneur you need to develop and increase a range of soft and hard skills that will help you grow your venture. The great news is these skills can also be applied in different job roles, projects and sectors.

One of the key soft skills is teamwork.

Gone are the days of the lone wolf. Just as it takes a village to raise a child, you need a village (your own team) to raise a business.

Your team can consist of anyone invested in the growth of your business, including mentors, fellow entrepreneurs, friends and family.

There are many benefits of practicing the art of teamwork. Some of our favourites are:

Collaboration

Each person you work alongside brings a different perspective to your venture, helping you see beyond your vision, experience and expectations. These different viewpoints result in new levels of creativity.

Longevity

Like the African proverb says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”. Your journey ahead is long. In a team, all of the decisions, risks and workload can be shared around, making the pursuit of your business sustainable.

Accountability

When you have a team working alongside you towards shared goals, there is less opportunity to let deadlines slip. With more than yourself to check-in with, your team becomes your accountability (nothing like subtle peer pressure to motivate).

We recently chatted with the Young Enterprise Scheme Regional Winners, Akau, who created and ran a thriving business during the craziness of this year.

It was Akau’s strong team dynamic that made their journey (lockdown and all) a success with each team member equally invested in the team’s vision, each accountable for their part and showing up ready to do the work to a high standard.
