Moira Moroney, Tauranga Startup Weekend Judge, lists ingredients for team success on the weekend ...
Moira left a successful corporate career for the thrill and excitement of entrepreneurship when she was just 27.
She sold her first business, Key Research in 2001 and co-founded the Base3usa warehousing operation in the USA in 2006.
Her latest venture and personal passion is the Booking Rooster which powers course and event booking sites for organisations like Zespri, Vertical Horizonz and the Federation of Maori Authorities.
Tell us a bit about your adventures in the entrepreneurial world so far Moira?
The goal for me is to build businesses that can run without me. It’s been a big thrill to see Key Research continue growing after I sold it and to step back from day to day involvement in Base3usa. The possibilities for Booking Rooster are mindblowing.
What are the elements of starting up a business that get you most excited?
I get hooked on developing better ways of doing things. With Key Research it was higher quality decision information, with Base3usa it was getting kiwi exporters a foothold in the US and with Booking Rooster it's helping organisations create very connected communities.
What is the most important thing that you think entrepreneurs should know?
Even the most successful businesses have rocky patches. You need to be able to weather the storm when times get tough. The ability to live off the smell of an oily rag helps.
What ideas would you like to see from Tauranga's Startup Weekend participants?
Ideas that can make a real difference to the target market and are very well formed, addressing how the product or service will be produced, marketed, sold, delivered and supported.
What is the critical piece of the start-up pitch that participants need to nail to capture your interest?
Convince me that your idea has a high chance of succeeding financially – even charitable ventures need sustenance.
